Na sua estreia na realização, Tony Scott mergulha num thriller erótico de beleza hipnótica, onde David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve e Susan Sarandon formam um sombrio triângulo entre vampiros e humanos. O filme abre no lendário clube londrino Batcave, ao som de “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”, tocada ao vivo pelos próprios Bauhaus, e transforma o vampirismo numa metáfora para o desejo, a dependência e a decadência do corpo. Recebido com críticas mistas em Cannes, “The Hunger” tornou-se entretanto um filme de culto e uma cápsula de estilo dos primeiros anos 80, particularmente acarinhada pela subcultura gótica. Às portas da era da SIDA, Scott filma a imortalidade como uma promessa falhada e o corpo como território de ansiedade e declínio. Para muitos, é a obra-prima de Tony Scott, irmão de Ridley Scott.

The film opens at London’s legendary Batcave nightclub, to the sound of Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”, and turns vampirism into a metaphor for desire, dependency and bodily decay. Met with mixed reviews at Cannes, The Hunger would later become a cult classic and a stylish time capsule of the early 1980s, particularly cherished by the goth subculture. On the brink of the AIDS era, Scott portrays immortality as a failed promise and the body as a site of anxiety and decline. For many, it remains Tony Scott’s masterpiece, and one of the defining films of his career.
