Beyond the popular myths surrounding Beethoven’s figure and the monumentality of his music, it is worth remembering that he inspires many different moods. He himself possessed an unpredictable temperament: at times caustic or depressive, at others magnanimous or affectionate, mocking or playful. In this Carnival Concert, conductor Henrique Constância and the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra explore this latter facet. Among other pages, they recall the ticking of the metronome in the Eighth Symphony and the famous four notes that open the Fifth (said to represent fate knocking at the door). They also perform Walter Murphy’s A Fifth of Beethoven — and the pun on a “fifth” as a traditional American unit of measure for alcoholic beverages should not go unnoticed. The programme also includes a musical parody of all nine symphonies by Louis Andriessen, written for orchestra … and an ice-cream vendor’s bell.
